LEGENDA O ZULEJKI

THE LEGEND OF ZULEJKA

It is known that numerous stories and legends are linked to the Ogulin area, and one of the most famous is the legend of the noble girl Zulejka from the beginning of the 16th century.

The girl Zulejka (or Đula) was the daughter of Ivan pl. Gušić, the commander of the Ogulin fortress. According to the custom of the time, the parents promised Zulejka to an unnamed older nobleman as a wife. However, the young Krajina captain Milan Juraić soon arrived in Ogulin, and Zulejka fell in love with him. Soon the news reached Ogulin that Milan had been killed in a battle against the Turks. Hearing this, Zulejka’s heart broke and the unfortunate girl threw herself into the abyss of the river Dobra, which received its name of Đula’s abyss (Đulin ponor). Today, if from the Đula’s Garden we look at the cliff above the abyss, we can see the profile of a man looking towards the big dark opening of the abyss. The inhabitants of Ogulin say that Milan is looking where his Zulejka disappeared.
