FAMILY LIFE OF IVANA BRLIĆ MAŽURANIĆ
In 1892, Ivana Mažuranić married the prominent politician Vatroslav Brlić from Slavonski Brod.
After the wedding, she moved with her husband to Slavonski Brod, where she lived most of her life.
Being completely a woman of her time, she was first and foremost a wife and mother, housewife and educator. Devoted to women’s duties, she engaged in literary work only in free time, although she created her first literary works as a girl, influenced by her famous grandfather, Ivan Mažuranić. As a mother, she had the opportunity to become familiar with children’s psyche, and thus understand the purity and naivety of their world. Her first printed collection was created by combining duty and desire to write, so it was written for her four children, and it included educational poems and short stories.
Later, when the children grew up, Ivana had more time for herself and her own literary creativity, so she wrote more, more self-consciously and with greater momentum.
She gave birth seven times, the first time when she was only eighteen years old, and two children died shortly after birth.
In late January 1893, Ivana gave birth to her eldest daughter, Nada, and in September 1894, she gave birth to her son Ivan. She gave birth to her second daughter Zora in 1897 at her parents’ in Zagreb, and a year later she gave birth to Zdenka. The last, seventh child of Ivana Brlić-Mažuranić and Vatroslav Brlić, daughter Nedjeljka, was born in 1917.
